Eichholz Million Dollar Match
In 2013, the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation issued a $1 million challenge grant accompanied by a $250,000 outright gift to endow the position of director and curator of the Art Gym and Belluschi Pavilion. The challenge grant, which must be completed by November 2018, supports the salary and benefits of a full-time director and curator.
The Eichholz family has long supported the arts. The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation was established in 2011 by Mercedes Eichholz on behalf of herself and her late husband. The late Mercedes Eichholz was a trustee of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1985 and board president from 2001 to 2003. When she resided in Portland decades ago, she made the acquaintance of Pietro Belluschi, architect of the Lake Oswego home that is now the Belluschi Pavilion at Marylhurst University.
Mercedes Eichholz’s son, Michael Davidson is a Portland-based tax consultant who serves on the Eichholz Foundation board of trustees. He has taught classes on business to aspiring artists at Marylhurst for years. Davidson became acquainted with Terri Hopkins, director and curator emerita of the Art Gym, during this time. Davidson proposed the Art Gym full-time director endowment to the Eichholz foundation, and the endowment challenge was created in 2013.
